This iconic theme is from the first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, sometimes called the Fate Symphony or the Victory Symphony. Written in the early 1800s, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is considered one of the most important works in the western musical canon. The "short-short-short-long" theme, sometimes called the Fate Motif, is recognized around the world and frequently appears in popular culture.
