One of the best-known melodies in all of music, Ode To Joy was written by Beethoven when he was almost completely deaf. Ludwig van Beethoven had lost most of his hearing by the time he composed his 9th Symphony in the 1820s, which contains the famous Ode To Joy (German: "An die Freude"). Ode To Joy was later adopted as the Anthem of the European Union.
